Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin)
Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin) is a medication that is used in treating neuropathic pains, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, anxiety, and restless leg syndrome. Neuropathic pain is caused when the nervous system is severely damaged or is affected by a disease.
Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin) is a branded drug but also has a generic counterpart, Pregabalin. It is categorized in a therapy class of drugs called antiepileptic. Generic Lyrica is licensed and manufactured by Pfizer and sold under the brand name Generic Lyrica. Lyrica is manufactured as substituted analogs of GABA (Gamma- Amino Butyric Acid) and one more additional component that is related to Neurontin. Neurontin is an antiepileptic drug gained a lot of success for Pfizer.
Generic Lyrica has been in the market for years now and Pfizer has been able to get the medicine approved in different zones of the world over the years. Back in 2004, July, Pfizer got approval across Europe for using Lyrica as therapy on people who were undergoing treatment for epileptic seizures and also for managing neuropathic pains.
By December 2004, the medicine got approval from the Food and Drug Administration of the United States of America. Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin) was approved for the treatment of neuropathic pains that are linked to postherpetic neuralgia and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This approval created a benchmark in the history of Lyrica. By 2005, Lyrica received approval from the FDA as an adjunction treatment to epileptic seems in adults. Generic Lyrica was granted approval for treating partial epileptic seizers in adults.
By June 2005, Lyrica also received approval for the treatment of fibromyalgia, making if the first drug to be given a heads up for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a disorder in which a person experiences widespread musculoskeletal pains sometimes coupled with fatigue, memory and mood issues, and sleep.
Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin), Successor of Gabapentin?
Gabapentin was also a drug manufactured by Pfizer back in 1983, which also goes by the brand name Neurontin. It was one of the top-performing drugs of Pfizer. But now that the patent for Neurontin is expiring, it faces serious threats of generic competition. Both the drugs, Gabapentin and Generic Lyrica belong to the same category of drugs and perform in the same way.
The pharmaceutical profile and the mechanism with which the drugs works are pretty much the same in both cases making Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin) the perfect successor of Gabapentin. The only difference between the two drugs is that Lyrica is more potent than Gabapentin. This means the same effects can be experienced by using smaller doses of Lyrica. Fewer dosages of Generic Lyrica are required as compared to Neurontin which reduces the risk of side effects related to higher doses.
Clinical studies have been carried out worldwide on around 10000 patients using Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin). But in 2009, Pfizer was charged and found guilty of misleading and defrauding by misbranding drugs. A subsidiary of Pfizer was marketing and promoting four drugs, for certain users that were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Lyrica was one of the four drugs. Pfizer was found guilty and had to pay a fine of 2.3 billion dollars. In addition to the fine, the company was also made to sign an integrity agreement.
This drug and Epilepsy
Gabapentin is approved around the globe and is found suitable as an adjunction treatment for patients who are going through the treatment of partial epilepsy. Since the drug is not metabolized, meaning it does not affect or interact with any co-administrated medications, this makes it perfect to use in communications with other kinds of antiepileptic drugs.
There have been extensive studies on Lyrica. All these studies have found out that Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin) is at least as effective as gabapentin in adjunction therapies which goes against a few antiepileptic medications. On a large scale, Lyrica is known to reduce the frequency of seizures to up to 75% of people. Some placebo-controlled studies along with oral Lyrica, which went on for up to 12 weeks have shown such results. In all studies, the dosage of Generic Lyrica used varied from 150 to 600 mg given on a daily basis.
Generic Lyrica and Neuropathic Pain and Anxiety Disorder
Neuropathic pain is a condition in which the nervous system is highly damaged resulting in very chronic pains. These pains include:
- Pain caused due to diabetic neuropathy
- Pain caused due to drug-induced nerve damage
- Pain caused due to compressed or trapped nervous
- Post-herpetic pain
- Pain caused due to fibromyalgia
- Pain caused due to Phantom limb syndrome which results in limb amputation.
- Post-herpetic pain
Neuropathic pains are not like other pains, they don’t respond to anti-inflammatory nonsteroids drugs, they don’t even respond to opioids. But gabapentin has proved to be helpful here. When taken in high dosages, gabapentin helps in reducing the postherpetic neuralgia or diabetic neuropathy. Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin) effectiveness of the drug has been proved by a number of clinical tests and surveys.
It works for people with fibromyalgia as well as diabetic neuropathy, Lyrica helps by reducing neuropathic pain.
There was a survey conducted with 529 patients, some of them were given placebo and some were given controlled doses of Lyrica daily for eight weeks. By the end of the study, it was proved that Generic Lyrica helped greatly in reducing pain as compared to placebo. It also helped in reducing fatigue and improved the quality of sleep for a lot of people.
Fatigue and bad sleep quality are some of the major symptoms of fibromyalgia. It has been very hard to treat these symptoms but with the help of Generic Lyrica, it has now been possible. The effectiveness of the drug has also been proved in another placebo-controlled clinical study involving 1200 patients, most of them suffering from an anxiety disorder.
It was found that Pregabalin was more effective in reducing the somatic and psychic symptoms as compared to Venlafaxine. The overall finding of the survey proved that Lyrica bonded the benefits of benzodiazepines and antidepressants.
Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin): Market Competition
Since the patent for Generic Lyrica (Pregabalin) will end soon, it will give rise to its generic counterparts. Once generic gabapentin is manufactured an approved, Pfizer’s sales of Neurontin will drop drastically. This will make the doctors switch from prescribing Neurontin to Pregabalin. If things work out the way as planned, this will be a very important strategy on behalf of Pfizer to give a fight to their generic competitions.
Lyrica is proved to be more effective as compared to Neurontin even in lower doses. This means fewer doses and fewer side effects which puts it in a strategic position to capture Neurontin’s share of the market.
